What could it mean, ecologically, socially and economically speaking, to make one’s home at the outermost edge of the inhabitable world? This presentation by PhD candidate Anne-Sophie Balzer is a recollection of a summer spent on the Arctic archipelago and an introduction of three place-based artistic projects (unfinished, ongoing) that deal with the impacts of human infrastructure in Longyearbyen, a town that labels itself a sustainable destination.

The event is part of the program of the Public Climate School at the University of Augsburg.

Pipelines can be seen running from the centre of the picture, making their way to a village in the background. The pipelines lie on a meadow.
