Green Hour: Cultural Sustainability, Cohabitability, and Ecopoetics in Action (Prof. Kate Rigby)

Thursday

June 11
12:00 PM - 01:00 PM
2026

This talk is based on a forthcoming contribution to the book Cultural Sustainability. It begins with an overview of recent United Nations discussions on the cultural dimensions of sustainability — an aspect still largely overlooked within the current Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The talk then introduces the concept of “deep sustainability,” drawing on the work of Australian feminist ecophilosopher Val Plumwood, as an approach aimed at fostering the conditions for greater planetary cohabitability. Particular attention is given to the role of creative practice in cultivating cohabitability, concluding with a contemporary example of what has been described as “ecopoetics in action.”
