review: Green hour: “intersectionality, environment and disaster” (libertad Chavez-Rodriguez)

As Libertad Chavez-Rodriguez, PhD, explained in her talk, Climate justice and gender justice must go hand in hand, especially since climate disasters are statistically more dangerous for women. But women are not only particularly vulnerable to climate change but can also be agents of change in face of the climate disaster. Chavez-Rodriguez built her argument on an intersectional approach which addresses the manifold social differences that intersect within societies and individuals: risk and inequalities are mutually constitutive and mutually reinforcing each other. Woman with lower income, e.g. are vulnerable in particular ways that differ from how climate change affects their husbands, brothers, or fathers. If one wants to mitigate risk in the face of climate change, reenforcing the representation of women in disaster management institutions is a valid intervention to common practices. As Chavez-Rodriguez explained, fostering a multi-perspective approach is a promising path to take when it comes to dealing with climate caused disasters.
