Martiné Van der walt
Raised on a farm, where I learned early that environmental care starts with muddy boots and curious questions. I grew up in South Africa, surrounded by animals and immersed in the rhythms of the natural world. This early connection sparked a lifelong interest in ecological systems and environmental stewardship. I studied Environmental Science at the University of Pretoria, where I also explored the selection of native plants to improve urban ecosystem functions in Tshwane, culminating in a research-based Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture.
I pursued an Education qualification as well and spent many years involved in the tertiary sector. My academic journey reflects a growing interest in ecology, sustainable development, and environmental education—an interest I now aim to deepen through the Environmental Humanities/Anthropogeography. As part of the Rainbow Nation, I come from a country with 11 official languages (with my home language being Afrikaans) and a rich cultural diversity. This country is also home to nine different biomes and many species of biota. The most special of them all, however, is my sweet and stubborn little Dachshund, Romi 🙂

My research explores how urban ecology and environmental education can transform informal paratransit stops into sustainable public spaces. By proposing a scalable model for urban resilience and ecological stewardship, the project addresses pressing development challenges in South Africa and offers adaptable insights for other African cities.
