Thomas Potthast

bio-philosophy, biodiversity and conservation, interdisciplinary ethics

Thomas Potthast is Full Professor of Ethics, Theory and History of the Life Sciences, and Director of the International Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) at the University of Tübingen, Germany. He studied biology and philosophy and did his PhD on evolution, ecology, and environmental ethics (Die Evolution und der Naturschutz, Frankfurt am Main 1999). His expertise is in bio-philosophy (e.g., Humanökologie, Berlin 2021; with Bernd Herrmann and Bernhard Glaeser), biodiversity and conservation (e.g., Naturschutzethik” Baden-Baden 1999; with Uta Eser), interdisciplinary ethics (e.g., Ethik in den Wissenschaften, Tübingen 2015; ed. with Regina Ammicht Quinn), and (education for) sustainable development (e.g., Nachhaltige Entwicklung von Hochschulen. Erkenntnisse und Perspektiven zur gesamtinstitutionellen Transformation, Opladen 2024; ed. with Marco Rieckmann, Bror Giesenbauer, Benjamin Nölting and Claudia Schmitt). Thomas works on conceptual and practical questions of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects and is member of the German Committee of Sustainability Research, mandated by DFG.
